On the 25th Jan 2009 our Board member "Strangler" (Guy Hanson) set a new 1/4 mile Aussie Record for Unlimited Outboard breaking the old record by 11 MPH The pass was 114.2 MPH.  His boat is a 30 year old timber Molinari Tunnel and the motor is 25 year old Evinrude. Go the classic boats!! says Guy.

I interviewed Guy recently, and these were his answers (in green)

Venue:  National Water Sports Centre. Carrum, Victoria.
Anyone you wish to thank: Sponsors? Pit Crew?  Sons? Mother?   James and Benjamin (my twin sons) Pit crew and support.

Prop Dia Pitch and No of blades?  Three blade original prop F1 19 inch pitch  (same prop I use for circuit racing) I might get a better accelerating one (prop) and try to improve speed.
Fuel Type?  Pump 100 fuel from local servo!
Brand of oil? Mercury racing synthetic, see even Mr Mercury helped, even have a Merc 10,000 rpm tacho
Elapsed Time?  I don't know ET but felt like about 5 sec.!! but probably more like 10 sec.
Motor capacity and estimated HP?  3500 cc V8 F1 Evinrude, eight dual throat carbs, dual ignition so 16 coils and 16 spark plugs !!  She's a special race motor built in the 1980s and produces at least 400 hp some motors were developed up to around push out 500 hp. The motor on the Outboard world speed record boat was similar but it had EFI and dyno'd at a whopping 600 hp in 1988 !
Any other comments Guy?  I looked at tacho as I crossed the line and the boat was really starting to accelerate at this point and saw 8000 RPM, I think with the right prop and raising the motor a little (which is integral hydraulic on this motor, and I haven't tried yet!) I reckon we can go a bit quicker in the 400 mtr.

Well done Guy you are a Champ!!
