Clive started boatbuilding on the banks of the Yarra River in Melbourne. Clive was in the timber industry originally and decided that boats were a great way to sell more timber.

Hello David,
Seems like you are getting us back on an 'even keel'.
My posts have been a little extraneous but hopefully interesting to some, particularly in the quiet times.
Only having SX-2 as a real contender, which is still being restored (posts later over the winter months) .
I have mentioned before about Caporns in Sydney from whom I have purchased boating timber. They are very well known here.
Do any members know the family connection?
You have opened up new areas just as  Mercman is breaking into new ground as our roving correspondent Grin

Hi Neil.
When I first bought my Stylecraft maybe 6 years ago, I thought it was a Caporn, so I started an investigation which tracked me to Clive Caporn who was in his 80s and was happy to chat. He told me that he was in the timber industry and decided that boat building would be a good way of moving timber. If I were to interview him now I'd ask him who designed the hull as it was basically carried on through to Stylecraft (I think they became Huntsman) who ended up with a timber decked fiberglass hull.
Anyway, Clive died a few years back and I can't find any of the numbers I tracked him down with, but I have emailed the classic yacht people who received a lot of help from Clive and I'm waiting for a reply from them.
Will keep you posted.
David
