Hey guys.

All good here... just busy with life = family, business, house reno, etc, and I just not even enough time to keep trying to find a home for them.

A shame as would be nice to see them fixed up and on something.

Spot on re a Powercat.  That, or a large timber cruiser (like what they came off), were the top of my list plans at one stage.

I'm not checking in here too often, so maybe if anyone is keen just shoot me an email (aaroncjenkin@gmail.com).

Hope you guys are all great.

HI Gang,

I hope you are all keeping well.

All good here, but no boat stuff for a few years now and not looking like anything any time soon.

I wanted to bump this one back up the top, as I still have the twins just sitting there and would like to see them find a new home.

Open to any/all offers.

Hi Neil,

They are shorties (15").

Cost/value... that's the tricky part and why I am seeing if I can find a swap first.  It takes some pressure of the $ value question.

Cheers,
AJ

Ok gang,

I have been thinking long and hard here, but the twins are going to go.  My focus is just too spread and I don't think I'm ever going to get to do them the justice they deserve.

I'm going to try putting them up up for "swap" for decent later model inline-6 Merc.

What I'm after... I'd love a late 60s to 70/71 Merc 100, 125 or 135, but would also go any age 115, 140 or 150.  It needs to be in very good condition, even comp and not bashed around. I'd be even happier if it had some history with it (re service history).  Happy to talk shipping, cash balance, etc for the right motor.

As for the twins... pretty much everything about them is on the table here: http://board.net.au/yabbse/index.php?topic=1507.0

Both crank really nicely, but neither start (no spark).  One has a busted centre bush on the distributor, which you can get off Ebay for $9 plus postage: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/390971421633?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I'm not sure about why the other has no spark.

They'll come with all the info about the motors and boat, that I have collected in a Word Doc and a CD of the original 1963 ABC documentary of them powering Akroonah down the Murray.

Any Q's, ask away or message me.

Forget waves... mine is falling to bits just sitting in the driveway (the motor at least)  ;-)

Na, I'll keep Capricious.  She has about zero value to anyone, so no point selling her, and I'll just stick her in the yard for a rainy day.

Update...

I grabbed 15min  away from work and put the other motor (the one that has been siting on the back of Capricious) on the control and battery and she spins beautifully.
I squirted a little fuel with extra oil down the carbies first, and you could hear the cranking RMP lift very quickly over the first few cranks.
However, as per the other motor, no spark.
Possibly the same, easy to fix $20, issue in the distributor?

However, (hope you're all listening) I've decided I'm never going to do them any justice...

... With the Glastron's 1000SS giving me headaches, the Gastron itself with lots of issues (re floor rot and maybe transom), me missing out on fun on the water, the new (re old, circa 1975 ) house and garden I need to focus on renovating and new baby due in 5 weeks, I've decided I am going to flog the lot (Mercs, Glastron, parts, etc) and pool the funds to buy a better (I now know what to look for) 1970's toy.

I'll put a post in the For Sale section once i work out how best to put them up for sale in a way that biasses you guys, makes it fair and so I get the best I can for them (i.e. for the next boat).

Stay tuned.

Yes, that's the plan then I think.

What was the last year of the 115?  Circa 1987/88?

Anyone know the whereabouts for a good one for sale?  Grin

I found this: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/291845633553?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT...
... but the asking price is a bit rich in my opinion.  Seems like low hours for her to have needed a piston replacement.

Hey Mark and Guy,

Thanks for the info and especially the offer of help Mark.

Are replacements available? I assume it'd mean finding recent used plates?

The thing is, after redoing all the wiring and fuel lines, finding a newer gearbox, the forward control issues (now fixed), full new water pump, tweaking, tuning (re Ken Firth, though wonder why he never spotted the issue!!!???), etc... I'm running low on confidence that if I go to all the cost and trouble of fixing this current issue, she'll just throw up another.

My plan B (find a newer 115hp inline-6 in decent condition) is looking more and more viable as this motor looks less and less!  There are plenty around.

I could save further expense, part out this one, keep all the new bits as spares, find a decent late generation inline-6 115 and probably not bee much worse of cost-wise.  though... the plan being with way more reliability and serviceably.

After all, as fun as this all is, I want to get her on the water and having some fun a some point....

Heya AA,

That hull has been around Ebay for ages.  Its quite different to the two Capricious' but still cool looking.

Its more of a clinker style in fibreglass and the gunnel line does not drop to the widest part of the transom.

So I decided to check the plugs first, as that's the easiest job.

I think she's caput!

Now if you remember, I have only ever run her on muffs, but this week she ran in water for about 30min total, by the time I gave up.

I think, having her now run in water, has shown the issue (or the key issue at least).

Looks like I have water in pots 4, 5... and 6... by the creamy oily mixture (which if you recall I had lots off when playing with the gearbox a while back but never connected to maybe being the motor!).

pots in photo =
1 - 2
3 - 4
5 - 6

I'm open to ideas, but I think I'm back to plan B, which was to find a decent last generation inline-6 and paint/decal to look at least part-original.

I'll get back to you ASAP Guy.  Should have time to work through your list (I've printed it) later today.

Oh shite... I just remembered something Ken Firth pointed out...

... the 'coil to distributor' lead is not an original copper core lead.  Its a newer silicone lead.  I think Ken said something about these newer leads had more (?) resistance?

Could that be a potential contributing factor???

A,
I ended up getting the BUHW off Ebay.au for $8 each.  It was about the best I could find in AU.  SuperCheap had them for more than double that!

Hey Michael,
No matter how much time and money I spend on this old Merc, in the back of my mind, I fear it'll end up being the same scenario.  Do all this work to get it running, but then it has a major parts failure that makes it only good for parts anyway.  But hey.... that's the fun of it I guess ;-)
